Vitamin C just ain't for scurvy!

Vitamin C. You heard about it, but what exactly does it do besides prevent scurvy? ARG! It’s pretty stellar stuff in all of its forms. As an esthetician, two of my favorite ways to get this amazing vitamin are through a serum and whole foods.

VITAMIN C CREATES RADIANCE

Topically, vitamin C helps suppress an enzyme called tyrosinase, which handles melanin production(the pigment in the cells). Therefore, vitamin C helps diminish the look of discoloration/spots in the skin. When used regularly in a skin care routine, you can visibly see brightening in the skin as it is balancing skin tone and strengthening the skin. Strong skin, in turn, is better able to retain moisture and regulate melanogenesis, which in turn becomes balanced. Balanced melanogenesis means clear, even toned skin as spotty discoloration fades. Pretty cool series of events, right?

VITAMIN C AIDS SKIN

As a potent antioxidant, and key player in collagen formation, Vitamin C comes in multiple forms whose benefits work for every skin. With consistent topical use it can improve skin wrinkling and allow a more youthful appearance come through. Taken as a supplement or through foods rich in C like citrus fruits, tomatoes, peppers, kiwis and strawberries, you help the body heal wounds faster and with less scarring.

VITAMIN C PROVIDES PROTECTION

Environmental pollutants cause our skin cells damage. Fortunately, the benefits of vitamin C in skin care help protect against this free radical damage which can slow visible signs of aging. Free radicals are chemically unstable, unpaired electrons that hunt down other electrons in an effort to stabilize themselves. Think of free radicals as that one REALLY drunk friend who wants a buddy to partake in their shenanigans. They are unstable and want someone to pair up with, but usually not in a good way.  All bodily cells are vulnerable, but skin cells take the brunt, which eventually shows up in the mirror.
